Seiko Announces presage Cocktail Limited-Edition SRPH78 Men’s Watch

The "Cocktail Time" collection of watches by Seiko Presage has established themselves as a standard of contemporary formal wear. After nearly a decade on the market, the line continues to be one of the most influential and popular in affordable watchmaking, thanks to its sturdy movements, adaptable designs, and beautifully finished dials. Master mixologist Hisashi Kishi, owner of Tokyo's renowned Star Bar in the ritzy Ginza neighbourhood, has contributed to the success of the "Cocktail Time" line. Kishi's original cocktails often serve as inspiration for these limited-edition variations on the formula; for the latest release, Seiko explores sake, the spirit most closely associated with Japan. The sake-based Houjou cocktail serves as inspiration for the new limited edition Seiko Presage SRPH78, which features a stunning new custom dial finish designed to evoke the texture of raw sheaves of rice.

The Seiko Presage SRPH78, like the rest of the "Cocktail Time" collection, features a 40.5mm case made of polished gold tone stainless steel. The dial remains the focal point of the design despite a slight shift in emphasis due to the addition of gold tone to the watch's already recognisable mix of slim vertical case sides, simple downturned lugs, and a narrow sloping bezel. The Seiko Presage SRPH78, like other models in the series, features a display caseback that exposes the entire in-house movement. However, the series as a whole shares the same mediocre water resistance rating of 50 metres.

The dial on the Seiko Presage SRPH78, like those of many other recent Seiko products, is impressive in its level of detail and polish. The silver dial surface is one of the most intricate in the "Cocktail Time" series, rivalling the sharply bevelled dagger-shaped indices, faceted dauphine hands, and cocktail stirrer-inspired seconds hand that are all standard features. The brand claims that the dial's curved crosshatch texture is meant to evoke the appearance of rice sheaves against the golden backdrop of the Japanese countryside, and indeed the dial has a three-dimensional, fibrous quality. The effect is striking and lively, strikingly setting itself apart from the rest of Seiko's stable in terms of visuals, despite being one of the more abstract visual themes in the current lineup.

The automatic Seiko 4R35 movement is what keeps the Presage SRPH78 ticking. Many of Seiko's collections use the 4R35 because it is a sturdy, reasonably priced movement that keeps time reliably for 41 hours at a 21,600 bph beat rate. Though the 4R35's bridges and plates are neatly finished with vertical brushing, Seiko adds visual drama to the caseback view by including an ornate gold tone skeleton rotor. The strap of the Seiko Presage SRPH78 has been given a little extra flair by the addition of double contrast stitching in warm gold to complement the watch's clean teak brown leather.

The limited edition Seiko Presage SRPH78 is a sophisticated ode to the history of sake with its clean, warm execution and one of the line's most dramatic dial finishes to date. The Presage SRPH78 is a limited edition watch from Seiko that will be released in February 2022 at an MSRP of $495 through authorised dealers.
